This threading bug occurs when one thread gets an object from the Cache via an osgDB::read*File() call where only a pointer to the object is passed back, so taking a reference to the object is delayed till it gets reassigned to a ref_ptr<>, but at the same time another thread calls a flush of the Object Cache deleting this object as it's referenceCount is now zero. Using osgDB::readREf*File() makes sure the a ref_ptr<> is passed back and the referenceCount never goes to zero. To ensure the OSG builds when OSG_PROVIDE_READFILE is to OFF the many cases of osgDB::read*File() usage had to be replaced with a ref_ptr<> osgDB::readRef*File() usage. From Jason Beverage, "I posted a question on osg users about resources not being properly released when using osgTerrain databases and multiple viewers are used a few weeks ago and I've found that at least part of the problem comes down to the fact that the nodes that are traversed by the GeometryTechnique are never actually added to the scene graph, and thus don't have releaseGLObjects called on them. I'm submitting a few changes that takes care of this by allowing the TerrainTechnique to provide a releaseGLObjects implementation. I've applied these changes in osgEarth and this example program no longer crashes on the second run, although I get corrupt geometry (see attached shot) which could be down to a driver issue. If I increment the context ID for the second viewer, I no longer get the corrupt geometry. The attached changes are against OpenSceneGraph 2.8.2. //Sample program.
